About Randal

Randal Preston is a wildlife painter who currently lives in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Florida Native, outdoor and fishing enthusiast, Randal draws much of her inspiration from her lifestyle near and on the water. She is a self-taught artist who has been refining her techniques in acrylic painting for most of her life. In 2009, she graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in education. Her love for art never ceased during this time as she continued to study art outside of school and work, while also cultivating an artistic style all her own. She currently teaches Art Education at Indian River Elementary School, while also pursuing her own art outside of work. You can find her swordfish bills at New Smyrna Beach Outfitters. Other works by Randal are displayed and for sale in various places throughout New Smyrna Beach. Salon 404 has a collection of originals and prints, and you can also view Randal’s New Smyrna Beach Shark Statue currently on display at the Babe James Community Center.

Ponce the Shark

The story of “Ponce” the Shark began in February 2021, when Randal was 1 of 5 local artists chosen by the City of New Smyrna Beach and the Youth Task Force to paint a 7 foot shark statue for city display. Boy mom and Inshore Captain’s wife, Randal feels most inspired by the collective memories she makes with her family on the water. So, the elements of the shark design flowed naturally. Randal also wanted to encompass her job as an art teacher. Accordingly, throughout the shark you can also see abstract, colorful mullet painted by her art students at Indian River Elementary School. Ponce took over 60+ hours to complete from the initial sketch to final clear coat.

Ponce is currently on public display at the Alonzo “Babe” James Center located on 201 N. Myrtle Ave. in New Smyrna Beach. Eventually he will be auctioned off to a local business where he will continue to be on public display. The city’s goal is to eventually have 30 #SharksofNSB located throughout the city, to both highlight the art community and spread a positive light on the unique landscape and wildlife that depict our hometown.
